University of Montana - Missoula

The College of Health Professions and Biomedical Science

Letter From the Director

The School of Social Work is entering its most exciting era since its initial accreditation 35 years ago. Beginning fall 2002, the School began offering the MSW degree, extending our national recognition in undergraduate social work education to a graduate program. The School's longstanding commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community service has helped to shape a MSW program that addresses the complex demands placed on today's social worker and a growing need for contemporary knowledge and advanced skills.

The region's diverse terrain and isolated living conditions, coupled with a precarious economy and political environment, generate extreme forms of social disruption as individuals and families encounter a wide range of personal and social issues. These issues present a variety of unique learning opportunities for students not only seeking advanced social work training, but an improved understanding about how specific knowledge and skills can be applied to individuals, families, and communities that encounter conditions similar to those experienced in the northern plains and rocky mountain west regions. To help address contemporary issues facing the region, as well as the personal and professional demands of prospective students, The University of Montana MSW program offers a two-day curriculum (Thursday, Friday) that is both flexible and able to be individualized based on professional interests and experiences. The program is also pursuing private funding to provide additional scholarships and teaching assistantships, and to expand distance-learning opportunities.

I hope you consider joining us as we begin this new era, and together, build knowledge that produces positive social change.

Sincerely,
Janet Finn, Ph.D.
MSW Director
