What is a Clinical Residency?

Planned program of post-professional clinical and didactic education, designed to advance significantly the resident’s preparation as a provider of patient care services in a defined area of clinical practice. A residency combines opportunities for ongoing supervision and mentoring with a theoretical basis of advanced practice and scientific inquiry. The primary outcome of a residency is to prepare physical therapists for the APTA Specialist Certification Exam while fulfilling the practice eligibility requirements to sit for the exam.

Why have a Sports Residency?

APTA believes Post-Professional Clinical Specialist training is key to Advancement of the Profession. Residency will be the normative model for Board Certification Residency Programs  are accredited by the American Board of PT Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) which allows graduates of credentialed programs to count all hours spent in their residency programs as hours toward meeting the requirements of eligibility to sit for the board certification exam. The policy permits most residents to apply for and take a Board Specialization exam at the completion of a full-time, year long residency.

Mission of UM Physical Therapy Clinic Sports Clinical Residency

To graduate advanced practitioners of sports physical therapy who will express their education through excellence in the practice and teaching of clinical skills, who will continue to expand the body of knowledge in sports medicine by participating in clinical research and who will make a lasting contribution to their local professional community. What’s involved with the Sports Clinical Residency?

Education and training focused to enhance clinical application and performance in sports practice Curriculum Based on the Sports Description of Specialty Practice (DSP), APTA Specialty Boards (click here for more specifics on the curriculum).  There are currently 15 Credentialed Sports Residency Programs in USA.  The residency programs are eligible to be certified after they accept their first resident and begin their program.  We are currently in the middle of training our first resident and recruiting for our second sports resident.

Time commitment of the Sports Residency and the basic distribution of work:

1800 hours over 12 months (August 20, 2012—August 30, 2013) includes,

    • 150 mentored with patients (3-4 hours/week)
    • 75 hours class/lab/self-study instruction (1-2 hours/week)
    • 150 hours working as a teaching assistant (3-4 hours/week)
    • 200 hours athletic venue coverage
    • 1000 hours independent patient care with primarily sports related injuries
    • (20 hours/week)

What is the Admissions deadline?

We are currently accepting applications for the 2011-2012 resident position. Please proceed to this link for information related to the application process,  the application form, and the Letters of Reference form for the Sports Clinical Residency.

What are the Admission Criteria?

  • Licensed PT
  • Preference for UM graduate
  • Completion of Emergency Responder training (or equivalent )prior to starting the residency program
  • In addition, a successful applicant must have a desire to:
  • Achieve clinical excellence in sports medicine
  • Learn from mentors in an adult learning model
  • Participate in clinical research
  • Develop their leadership and teaching skills

What is the Financial Costs and Salary of the UM Sports Residency?

Resident will be a Graduate Assistant and will receive:

Salary for 20 hours/week in clinic with health and malpractice insurance, along with Continuing Education

A graduate assistant stipend for teaching in the UM entry-level DPT program

Resident will be asked to pay:

Tuition for 4 credits (60 hours of didactic) classes each semester- (amount determined by the Board of Regents)
