The University of Montana Public Health Programs

The University of Montana offers unique online, digital learning programs leading to a Master of Public Health (MPH) and a Certificate of Public Health (CPH). This is the only MPH degree program in Montana. The Montana Board of Regents approved these programs in March 2005. The first class of MPH students was admitted for the fall semester of 2006. The focus of our programs to prepare public health practitioners who will use global insight to improve the health of people in rural areas.

Our Mission

The mission of the UM MPH program is to provide distance-based learning activities, supported by scholarship and service activities, to prepare public health practitioners who will use global insight to improve the health of the people of Montana and other rural areas.


ACCREDITATION:

Accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental process of self-study and external review intended to evaluate, enhance and publicly recognize quality in programs of public health and schools of public health. The University of Montana MPH program is currently seeking CEPH accreditation. The program has completed its self-study process and hosted a CEPH site visit on October 17-18, 2011. The CEPH Board of Councilors will meet June 21-23, 2012 and discuss the results of the Montana MPH site visit and render an accreditation decision at the conclusion of the meeting. Program officials will receive written notification of the Board decision within 30 days of the Board meeting.

The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) is an independent agency recognized by the US Department of Education to accredit schools of public health and public health programs offered in other university settings.

The UM MPH program will host a site visit from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) for our initial accreditation October 17-18, 2011.

BIG congratulations to Erin Gael Chambers on her appointment as a consultant to the Alameda Health Consortium, leading the Patient Centered Medical Home Demonstration Project for the Ryan White Part C Grant. The PCMH project aims to expand, systematize, and institutionalize existing elements of the patient centered medical home model within the network of 6 agencies providing care for HIV positive individuals in Alameda County, California.

Northwest Center for Public Health Practice Regional Network Steering Committee

Dr. Craig Molgaard of the School of Public and Community Health Sciences, attended a Northwest Center for Public Health Practice Regional Network Steering Committee meeting at the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle, Washington. Directors of MPH programs from the Northwest States serve on the Steering Committee for the Regional Network.


Amanda Golbeck elected to membership in the international Statistical institute

Dr. Amanda Golbeck of the School of Public and Community Health Sciences (President of the national Caucus for Women in Statistics and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association) was elected to membership in the International Statistical Institute (ISI) in Dublin, Ireland on August  26, 2011 at the 58th World Statistics Congress of the ISI.

Elected members are elected by virtue of their contributions to the development or application of statistical methods, administration of statistical services, or development and improvement of statistical education.

The ISI has elected members from 105 countries. The United States has 550 elected members. Dr. Golbeck is the only elected member from the state of Montana.

SPCHS Faculty member Annjeanette Belcourt -Ditloff, PhD and recent graduate Erin Bills, MPH had articles accepted to the Spring/Summer issue of Northwest Public Health. Dr. Belcourt co-authored "Tribal Borders: Confronting Health Disparities and Accessible Care" with Gyda Swaney, PhD, and Gordon Belcourt, Executive Director of the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council. Erin's submission is titled "Social Capital in Libby, Montana: Barriers to Forming Support Networks" based on her MPH practicum and research work. Dr. Craig Molgaard, PhD, MPH, Chair and Professor, SPCHS sits on the editorial board of Northwest Public Health.

John Felton received the “Student Prize for Outstanding Research or Creative Activities in the Study of Public Health” for Inter-jurisdictional Collaboration: Local Public Health Officials versus County Commissioners completed with co-author and SPCHS Professor Amanda Golbeck (in press, Journal of Public Health Management and Practice).
