Vernon R. Grund was hired by The University of Montana in 1992 to serve as the Chair of the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He previously served as Chair of the Division of Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati (1985-92) and held faculty appointments in Pharmacology-Toxicology and in Biochemical Pharmacology at the University of Cincinnati and the State University of New York at Buffalo, respectively. He has a BS in Pharmacy (1969) and earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacology at The University of Minnesota Medical School in 1974. Dr. Grund currently serves as the President of the American Heart Association, Northwest Affiliate. He also holds an appointment as Assistant to the Vice President for Research & Development/Health Sciences at The University of Montana. In 2008, he moved on to serve the College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education.

RESEARCH STATEMENT
The general areas of research interest are cardiovascular disease and diabetes, with particular emphasis on atherosclerosis, cardiovascular complications of diabetes, and drugs that reverse the insulin resistance of Type II diabetes. More specific interests include immunochemical modulation of insulin secretion and metabolic homeostasis, histamine receptors in adipose tissue, and influences of pioglitizone and troglitazone in insulin-resistant Zucker diabetic fatty rats. The goal of this research is to aid in the development of new drugs for atheroscleotic vascular disease and to reduce the risk of premature death from heart disease and stroke.
