Admission Requirements

 

- Medicinal Chemistry -

 

Students are encouraged to apply to the Graduate School no later than March 1 of the year in which they desire admission. Students usually enter the program fall semester. Applications are processed until all positions are filled.

WE REQUIRE:

  1. A completed application package:
    • Online Application
    • $51.00 US application fee (paid online with the application),
    • Personal statement / letter of intent,
    • 3 letters of recommendation,
    • Official transcripts from all colleges and/or universities attended,
    • Official GRE General Exam scores from ETS,
    • Official GRE BCMB Subject Exam (and TOEFL scores for international applicants) scores from ETS;

  2. A minimum undergraduate or masters GPA of 3.0, in a background in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, math, biochemistry, computer science or related field;

  3. Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Both the General GRE and the GRE Subject Exam in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology (BCMB) are required for admission.

    Minimum requirements for the General GRE is about 1000 cumulative.

    All students must attain a 50% or greater on the BCMB GRE by July 1 of their first year in residence to continue in the program. Students scoring less than 33% on the BCMB GRE are not admitted.  Students scoring from 33% to 49% on the GRE BCMB will be required to take BMED 600 (Advanced Cellular Biochemistry; 3 cr.) or an equivalent biochemistry course in year one of the program, and must receive a grade of ‘B’ or better as well as retake the GRE Subject Exam with a passing grade 50%-tile or greater.  Students may retake the BCMB test at any time in year one.

    Students attaining 50%-tile or greater prior to program entry achieve a passing level and are excluded from retaking the BCMB GRE exam and taking BMED 600 (or equivalent course);

  4. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). For international students, non-native speakers of English. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for admission is 577 or above on the paper-based version, 233 on the computer-based version, or 90 on the internet-based version.

  5. In order to issue a visa to international students, the University must have received an original (not a photocopy) certified statement from a bank or government agency that sufficient funds are available to meet the cost of study, living, and necessary travel above that of any stipend received.

WHERE TO SEND YOUR MATERIALS:

Arrange to have all letters of recommendation, transcripts and other supporting materials sent directly to the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the address below. DO NOT send materials to The University of Montana Admissions Office or Graduate School.
