The Minority Training Program coordinated by Agencourt is a two-year program funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The goal of this program is to increase the number of under-represented minority Ph.D. students with an interest in genomics. Program participants gain research experience under the guidance of successful genome scientists, and strengthen their academic qualifications through coursework at a variety of local universities. Graduates of the Minority Training Program are expected to enroll in competitive graduate schools with the goal of developing a career in the genomic sciences.

  • Predoctoral Fellowship Awards For Minority Students

AHRQ sponsors predoctoral fellowship awards for minority students. Designed to enhance racial and ethnic diversity in the health services research sciences, this fellowship provides up to 5 years of support for research training leading to the Ph.D. or equivalent research degree; the combined M.D./Ph.D. degree; or other combined professional and research doctoral degrees.

The American Indian Education Foundation was established to support educational opportunities for American Indian and Alaska Native students. Scholarships of $2000 are awarded for each school year.

A national selection committee chooses scholarship recipients. Decisions are based on an overall assessment of the scholarship application. The committee considers each applicant for the appropriate scholarship amount. Students from rural and remote reservation communities are encouraged to apply.

Since 1922, the Association on American Indian Affairs has been dedicated to helping Native people and their communities in meeting the challenges they face.  One of these challenges is that of paying for a higher education.  AAIA assists college students in meeting this challenge through seven scholarship programs.  AAIA offers two graduate fellowships, and five undergraduate scholarships for American Indian students in a variety of fields.

The program honors the legacy of former Congresswoman Jordan by creating new oportunities in health policy for minority students.  The program annually provides 15 talented minority college students the opportunity to work in a congressional office with health policy responsibilities.  During the 9 week experience (May 23- July 28, 2006,)the Barbara Jordan Scholars will gain exposure to health policy issues and firsthand understanding of how the federal government works.

The MESBEC program is the oldest of CTD's scholarship programs. The six priority fields of study are math, engineering, science, business, education, and computers. Science includes all the medical fields. These fields are the ones in which tribes need graduates the most, and the fields in which there are the fewest Indian graduates.

The scholarship program operates nationwide. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000 per academic year. Scholarships are awarded on merit and on the basis of the students we feel will most likely improve the lives of Indian people.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education. During its 30-year history, HSF has awarded more than 73,000 scholarships totaling nearly $170 million to Latinos from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam who have attended more than 1,700 colleges and universities.

1. Health Professions Preparatory Scholarship Program provides financial assistance for American Indian and Alaska Native (Federally or State Recognized) students only to enroll in courses that will prepare them for acceptance into health professions schools, i.e., nursing, pharmacy, etc.  Courses may be either compensatory (required to improve science, mathematics, or other basic skills and knowledge) or preprofessional (required in order to qualify for admission into a health professions program).

2. The Health Professions Pregraduate Scholarship Program provides financial support for American Indian and Alaska Native (Federally or State recognized) students only  to enroll in courses leading to a bachelor degree in specific preprofessional areas (premedicine and predentistry).

3. The Health Professions Scholarship Program provides financial assistance for American Indian and Alaska Native (Federally recognized only) students only enrolled in health professions and allied health professions programs. For this program, there are service obligations and payback requirements that the recipient incurs upon acceptance of the scholarship funding. Priority is given to Graduate Students, and Junior and Senior Level Students, unless otherwise specified.

JAPANESE AMERICAN CITIZENS LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Japanese American Citizens League began its National Scholarship and Awards Program in 1946. The JACL recognizes education as a key to greater opportunities for its members and therefore offers over 30 awards, with an annual total of over $60,000 in scholarships to qualified students nationwide. The National Scholarship and Awards Program offers scholarships to entering freshman, undergraduate, graduate, law, and creative & performing arts students. The National Scholarship and Awards Program also offers a student aid award. All scholarships are one-time awards.

THE KOREAN AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION (KASF)

The Udall Scholarship awards up to $5,000 per year to sophomores who are Native American or Alaskan Natives who intend to pursue careers in health care or tribal policy. Applicants who meet the above qualifications and hope to pursue a career in environmental policy are also welcomed. All applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Applications are available in the UM Davidson Honors College office.

MINORITY NURSE MAGAZINE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Open to racial and ethnic minority nursing students enrolled in the third or fourth year of an accredited four-year BSN program or in an accelerated program leading to a BSN degree (such as RN-to-BSN or BA-to-BSN) or an accelerated master's entry nursing program that bypasses the traditional BSN degree (such as BA-to-MSN). National Medical Fellowships is dedicated to improving the health of low-income and minority communities by  increasing the representation of minority physicians, educators, researchers, policymakers, and health care administrators in the United States; training minority medical students to address the special needs of their communities; and educating the public and policymakers to health problems and needs of the underserved populations.  Since 1946, National Medical Fellowships has awarded over $38 million to more than 23,000 recipients.

PACIFICARE LATINO HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The PacifiCare Latino Health Scholars program is designed to increase the number of bilingual students who choose to work in the health care professions.
