Description of REACH Summer Enrichment Program:
REACH provides academic and support services for disadvantaged students desiring a career in pharmacy, physical therapy, or other health care fields. The program is designed to help in the transition from the high school to the college environment. The six-week academic enrichment program is scheduled for June 18 - July 28, 2007. During the program students participate in 6 to 8 hours of educational activities six days per week. Recreational activities are scheduled every weekend.
Position Description
The Teaching Assistant will assist the course instructor with responsibilities in the classroom and tutor students outside of class. The TA will also serve as a liaison between the students and the REACH staff. The position is designed to foster an atmosphere for student learning and social/cultural growth.
Duties
- To promote a community atmosphere within the classroom and during other activities
- To maintain regular office hours which are clearly available to the students
- Working knowledge of UM’s resources and services to assist students
- Being aware of attitudes and behavioral patterns of students
- Attend daily tutorial sessions
- Support activities of the program by personal attendance and participation
- Assist students with understanding expectations of the class and the instructor
- Report violations of the REACH and University conduct codes
- Participate in weekly staff meetings
Position Qualifications
- The ability to effectively communicate and interact with persons from diverse economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to develop and foster working relationships with disadvantaged students.
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions logically and quickly
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Excellent oral and written skills
- The ability to manage and organize tasks and works with frequent interruptions.
- High School diploma and at least two years college required
- Minimum 3.0 GPA overall and 3.5 GPA in subject area
- Must have a valid Drivers License
